Project description

With an exhibition area of 45,000 square metres, there is always something to do, and particularly so when part of the area is to be renovated. As part of its major initiative for the future, the Deutsches Museum Munich will renovate its exhibitions in two sections by 2025 while also bringing the building up to date with the latest technology.

The redesign work on the first part of the exhibition began in October 2015. From 2020, the first exhibitions on the Bavarian Museum Island will reopen. When the historic building celebrates its 100th birthday in the year 2025, the entire building will have been renovated.

Why did the customer choose OBO products?

Over a total of nine kilometres that the visitor has to traverse to see all the areas of the museum, they will, in future, also encounter OBO Bettermann products from the areas of the cable support systems, the cable routing systems and the underfloor systems. The powder-coated sections, supplied in the colours anthracite and white, blend discreetly into the rooms. However, device installation trunking bases for direct mounting on the wall or on wall brackets, as well as the screed-covered EÜK duct system with the appropriate underfloor sockets which are barely visible, provide an optimum supply of power and data in the building.

OBO stood up to the challenge of keeping to the very tight delivery schedule for the powder-coated products.

What type of challenges occurred during construction?

For the renovation work, a small village of containers has appeared on Cornelius bridge in Munich. As the renovation work will be very extensive and the visitors shouldn't be inconvenienced, the task is particularly tricky. The State of Bavaria and the City of Munich are investing 445 million euros in the renovation of the Deutsches Museum, which was founded in 1903. With its collections and valuable exhibits, it is one of the most important collections of science and technology in the world.
