General building information
When the airport was built at the beginning of the 1990s, very different demands were placed on a passenger building than those of today.
The expansion of Terminal 1 serves to adapt the non-Schengen area to suit current requirements and improve the quality of service and visitor experience in the terminal itself. This will accommodate the needs of growing passenger numbers.
With around 285,000 take-offs and landings in 2022, Munich Airport is one of the most important hubs in Europe, and saw some 31.6 million passengers transiting through the airport last year.
Work began in 2019 with the dismantling of the old apron and commencing of underground construction work. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the façade and roof of the extension were completed. The completion and opening of the terminal is planned for the end of 2025.
The dimensions of the construction are enormous. The new terminal building covers around 96,000 m² and extends 340 metres into the western apron of the airport. In order to keep to the schedule, around 300 workers are on the construction site every day.
Why did the customer choose OBO products?
The customer is Munich Airport. When construction is finished, OBO Bettermann will have supplied around 50 kilometres of trays and rising sections.
And this is exactly why OBO was chosen. The company’s reliable supply capability, adherence to quotes and sufficient capacity to complete the work on time were decisive factors.
