Project description

The Maas tunnel in Rotterdam was built in 1942 and is not only the oldest traffic tunnel in the Netherlands, it is also one of the most important connections in the Rotterdam road network. A total of four tunnels are used daily by cars, cyclists and pedestrians, with around 60,000 cars passing through each day, and on particularly busy days this number climbs to as many as 100,000.

However, in 2011, it was discovered that the concrete of the Maas tunnel had suffered considerable damage over the years. In addition, the tunnel needed to comply with the new tunnel safety legislation in 2019. If the tunnel did not meet the requirements of this safety law, it would have to be closed. To avoid this, the Maas tunnel has been undergoing extensive renovation since 2017. As it is a national monument, the tunnel needs to be not only renovated but also restored, so that as much as possible of its original condition is preserved.

Why did the customer choose OBO products?

The city of Rotterdam stipulates that a large part of the project must meet the requirements of the maintenance of electrical function classes in the event of fire. OBO was able to supply many different products certified for the maintenance of electrical functionality, which enabled the project specifications to be realised. This was an important point that was in favour of the OBO products. Another factor: OBO was able to supply red cable trays that were suitable for high-voltage cables. Red cable trays are not a standard product, but a special solution that OBO created especially for the Maas tunnel.
